"Drop and gimme sixty-nine!" -- Logs
[Complete] Coffee and Catnip
9th-Mar-2007 10:24 pm
listened as the crowd would sing
Characters: Miranda (twinguns23), Reeve (stray_cait), anyone else who gets bored wants a kitty! :D
Where: Reeve's office, 65th Floor
Rating: PG, to be on the safe side
Summary: It's Kitten Adoption Day at the Department for Urban Development! Well, not exactly, but there's several ready to go home- and Miranda's got a chance to pick one up for herself. That is, if she passes the interview with the department head....

It always amused him how surprised everyone was when they entered his office for the first time. The usual assumption was that the room would be filled with shedded cat hair and old-lady doilies draped over plastic-covered chairs, permeated with the odor of weak tea and wet fur. Instead, the postmodern design of the room spoke of sleek comfort, of a space made to be lived in as much as it was for work. Potted plants were scattered everywhere, giving the room a very very faint floral scent, and the cats seen lounging about looked to be pampered and in the best of health.

For Reeve's part, he was hunched over his drafting table near his desk, an orange tabby Siamese mix twining about his feet and a black-and-white kitten on the table, batting at his pen as he worked. Sleeves rolled up past his elbows, he didn't seem too aware of anything else besides drawing and scratching the cats when they demanded it, but the office door was cracked open, ready to allow anyone in should they have business with him.

*knocks*

Mr. Teusti, I came to speak with you about one of your cats?
10th-Mar-2007 05:09 am (UTC)
Reeve glanced up at the knock, idly batting away the black kitten's attempt at snatching his ink pen from him, and motioned for the Turk to enter. Several cats could be seen sitting on the broad windowsill- most of the rear wall of his office was plate glass, offering an expansive view of the city and country behind it. "You're the one who was interested in adopting a cat, right? Go ahead and have a seat. I'll just be a second. Have to make sure the cats don't touch these until the ink dries... pawprints aren't very helpful on a blueprint."
10th-Mar-2007 05:19 am (UTC)
Miranda sat up straight, slightly nervous. This was the first time she had been in the executive's office in her short time as a Turk. She watched the cats meander back and forth on his desk and wondered how he could get anything done at all.

She chuckled as he spoke.

"No sir, they're not. Yes, I was interested in adopting a cat. Is it OK if I have some coffe?" she said, spying the coffee machine in the corner.
10th-Mar-2007 11:38 am (UTC)
An anonymous MP - indistinguishable from all the others behind full-faced mask and uniform - lurches into the office, carrying a rather heavy looking bag.
"Mr. Reeve, sir, I'm here to..." his professional tone fades away into dreary disinterest, "...change the litter box."
12th-Mar-2007 01:20 am (UTC)
"Help yourself. Creamer's in the mini-fridge." Picking up the kitten and placing him on his shoulder, he walked away from the drafting table to sit behind his desk. Two other cats were lounging on top of it, nibbling at the leaves of a potted plant. Actually there were plants everywhere- on the windowsill, on his desk, even one by the coffeemaker.

The MP lurching in made him sit up straighter; his orange Siamese hissed. "Quiet, Pixel," he admonished the cat, picking him up. "You're the fellow that got caught on the insubordination charge, eh? That's Mr. Tuesti to you, and there's five boxes. I expect each to be emptied and disinfected. You'll find the things in the bathroom." He gave Miranda a wink. "I admit, so far this detail's been a fairly efficient deterrent to young SOLDIER cadets looking for trouble."
12th-Mar-2007 01:01 pm (UTC)
"Actually" the MP spoke (out of turn - as was his wont), "I've already served my time for 'insubordination,' if you can call it that - by scraping gum off of Shinra's floor. This is just added insult to keep young SOLDIER cadets grumpy and..."
He trailed off and began on the first litter box, continuing to mutter under his breath. As Pixel lazily pawed at him, the MP faded into the peripheral.
12th-Mar-2007 08:39 pm (UTC)
"Sounds like you didn't catch the hint the first time," he replied, unable to keep a hint of amusement out of his voice. "You scraped gum off President Shinra's floor. All they want is the little formalities that lets everyone pretend we're all playing nice. Once you're in the barracks and out of company earshot, well...." He shrugged, scritching a passing cat. "There's no restrictions then."
12th-Mar-2007 07:12 pm (UTC)
"Thanks," she said, walking towards the fridge. She caught a glimpse of the cat nibbling the plant and chucked.

"I can see why, sir." she said. She took a sip from the steaming cup. It was by far the best coffee the ShinRa building had. She was jealous.

"So," she said, sitting back down. "How do we go about this transaction?"

She noticed her SOLDIER file still on his desk.

"You're really serious, aren't you? Are you afraid they won't have a good home?"
12th-Mar-2007 08:47 pm (UTC)
"It's a Costan blend," Reeve noted, watching her taste her coffee. "I don't usually let it known too far that I stock it. Veld knows it, and I should probably clue Scarlet in if she's having as rough a time with it as she's claiming... but otherwise I'd prefer to keep it quiet. Don't want my office turned into a coffee shop."

Noticing her glance, he tapped an inkpen on her file just before two orange tabby kittens pounced it. He gripped the folder almost unconsciously; it looked like he'd had a lot of experience in preventing natural disasters of the feline kind. "We talk, mostly. Why you're interested, have you ever had a pet before, etc. Actually, I usually make up my mind within five minutes of meeting the person." His smile faded. "There are others I'd give homes to if I could," he murmured just under his breath, ducking his head down enough to make it hard to read his lips, then straightened back up. "Well, I invest a lot of time and money into making sure they're healthy and happy. I just don't want to see them back in the slums I rescued them from."
13th-Mar-2007 03:35 am (UTC)
"I should buy this the next time I head out on vacation," she said. "I'm sorry for prying, but I noticed my folder on your desk and thought the worst."

She chuckled nervously, she had never been comfortable speaking casually with people higher than her. She choked down her nerves and set the cup on his desk. 'Stay calm Miranda, you're just here to talk about a cat. There could be any numerous reasons your files are on his desk...'

"I completely understand," she said, relaxing a little. "Nothing is more of a slap in the face than seeing all your efforts wasted. I'll start from the beginning. I've wanted a cat for a while now, but Mike wouldn't let me get one, he said he was allergic, but I think he just didn't like pets. He moved out and I've realized how nice it would be to have a companion. I haven't had a cat in quite a while, since I moved, so at least two years. He died, I didn't get rid of him, and I heard someone up on the 65th floor was keeping cats." She smiled. "And I thought maybe he'd give a lonely Turk some company."
13th-Mar-2007 03:58 am (UTC)
"I flipped through it and forgot to send it back, is all. I promise, I didn't delve in very deeply." He grinned, leaning back in his chair and managing to look somewhat dignified- except for the black-and-white kitten curling up on his shoulder. "You haven't been with the Turks for very long, have you? What's your specialty?"

There was a bit more to the meeting than he'd first mentioned- if he was going to hand over his grand opus to the Turks as a spy machine, he at least wanted to get a feel for the people who'd be using it. Rufus, Veld, and Scarlet knew about it, of course, but he'd been keeping everyone else out of the loop. "Ah, I see," he said, nodding as she told her story. "Allergies I can understand, but... well. I like most animals anyway, so it doesn't bother me. Except chocobos."
13th-Mar-2007 04:11 am (UTC)
"Is it that obvious?" she asked with a chuckle. "I've been here for a month and a half, just enough time for them to send me on a mission and then make me file papers for the other few weeks." Her expression gave away her distate for menial jobs such as filing papers.

"Specialty? Oh, guns. Two of 'em. My shot's a little rusty, but I have a knack for shooting dead-on target."

'See, that wasn't so hard,' she told herself as she relaxed fully into the chair, resting her cup of coffee on her thigh.

"I don't like chocobos much either. They stink a bit too much for me and I'd prefer to travel either by foot or by car."
13th-Mar-2007 04:31 am (UTC)
Reeve shook his head a bit, picking his ink pen back up and jotting down a few notes on the edge of his desk calendar. "Not really. I just hadn't heard or seen much of you, which either means you're new or staying under Veld's radar. I work with Administrative Research from time to time, so I like to at least be able to put names to faces." He unconsciously bit the end of the pen for a moment. "Dual guns, eh? Sounds like that'd be a bit hard to pull off, wouldn't it?"

The executive laughed when she mentioned her distaste for the large birds. "Agreed there. So. Do you have preferences on color or type, or would you just like to play with them for a bit before you decide the one you want?"
13th-Mar-2007 02:58 pm (UTC)
"Well, Veld has been keeping me busy," she started. "Dual guns aren't as hard to pull off as people think. They are only handguns after all."

She thought for a minute. This was a big desicion.

"I'm usually more picky when it comes to picking pets, but it seems like you've kept them groomed and well fed...I'd like to play with them a bit to help me decide, if you don't mind."
14th-Mar-2007 03:20 am (UTC)
As if on cue, a trio of kittens leapt down from his desk and windowsill and began milling about the Turk's feet, rubbing and purring and generally looking cute. "You said the magic word," Reeve said with a widening grin. "Whenever a stranger says 'play', they know they're going to get attention. Those three are the ones I have yet to find homes for. Pixel lives at the office-" he pointed at the orange Siamese mix, who yawned before going back to nibbling at a plant- "and Cait Sith the Fourth here goes wherever I do." The black-and-white kitten twitched an ear in response.

The trio of kittens were busy looking cute- a little striped tabby with white socksrubbing against Miranda's ankle; a little male calico with a long tail chewing thoughtfully at the side of her shoe; and a longhaired white kitten with lop ears rolling over on her back. "Well, they like you. That's a start."
14th-Mar-2007 03:32 am (UTC)
"Now comes the hard part," she said, bending down to pick one of them up. "I don't know how anyone's not taken these. They're all so cute."

She knew right away she wouldn't take the longhaired white one. White fur on a blue suit meant too much time spent with the masking tape roller than with the cat. The orange one's plant chewing habits were amusing, but she was worried that he might eat the flowers she'd just purchase and get sick. She couldn't afford the damages to her rug. She knew who it would be, but she felt bad, all these kittens needed homes, and they were so cute too!

'No Miranda,' she told herself as she made her final desicion. 'Don't go crazy with pets again. Just one for now is good, then you can get more later if this one works out.'

"Mr. Tuesti," she said, picking up the she assumed was Cait Sith the Fourth. "I've made my desicion."
14th-Mar-2007 03:51 am (UTC)
"I'm not too worried. I usually find homes for all of them. Shinra members just get first pick." He patiently waited for her to make her pick and nodded once she did. The little male calico was probably the most laid-back and affectionate out of the bunch, and a good fit for someone who probably worked odd hours.

"Heh. Well, then, he's yours. I think you'll make a good human for him." He grinned again. "Since cate usually own us and not the other way around."
14th-Mar-2007 03:54 am (UTC)
She chuckled, she knew it was true.

"Is there anything special you need to give me? I assumed you had a sort of regime with this bunch, and I wouldn't want to disturb it. I know how cats are with change."
14th-Mar-2007 04:04 am (UTC)
"I have a 'gift basket' of sorts that goes out with all the kittens I adopt out. I'll have it delivered to your apartment, unless you want t carry it out- it's a bit heavy, though." Heavy as in over 20 pounds of stuff, from kitty litter and food to toys and shampoo and hairball treatments. "As for regime... there is none. They're all used to people coming in and out, and I tend to work odd hours, so that won't bother them. I figure he'll adapt to whatever routine you'll develop pretty easily."

Jotting down another set of notes, this time in a worn and battered ledger, he gave her a glance over the edge of the book. "Let me know when you name him, hmm? I'm always curious as to how people name their cats."
14th-Mar-2007 04:20 am (UTC)
"Yes, I think it's best that you send it over. I imagine it will be hard to carry home, especially if I have to take the train."

She jotted down her address on a notepad that sat on his desk.

"This shouldn't be too hard to find. And I'll be sure to tell you. I can guarantee it won't be as dumb of a name as Vincent named his cat."
14th-Mar-2007 04:34 am (UTC)
Nodding, Reeve took the address and filed it away- the cat supplies would probably reach her home before she did. "I don't know- Mako isn't a bad name, really. It fits him. And Vincent... well, that's his business." He didn't like to analyze people- at least, not with someone he hardly knew. If it'd been Veld across from him, they'd have launched into a discussion over the poor man's psyche by now. "He likes Mako and takes good care of him- that's all I ask."
14th-Mar-2007 04:10 pm (UTC)
"Nothing against Vincent really," she said, turning to leave. "I guess it just seems like there are so many more appropriate names, but then again, I've never seen his cat."

"Don't worry, I'll be sure to take good care of him."
14th-Mar-2007 04:55 pm (UTC)
He lifted his fingers in a farewell wave- more for the kitten's benefit than anything. "Mako are also a type of shark found off the Wutai coast. And trust me, when that cat's angry, he's just like one." turning back to his paperwork, he began shuffling through reports, already switching gears back to work. "I'm sure you will. It was a pleasure meeting you, Miranda. I imagine we'll meet up again."
14th-Mar-2007 04:58 pm (UTC)
Her hand on the doorknob, she turned back as she walked away.

"The same to you, Mr. Tuesti. I'm sure we'll meet again."
15th-Mar-2007 12:08 pm (UTC)
The MP finished cleaning and stood in the office, holding a small, full, garbage back.
"Maybe you're right," he said, "I guess I'm just not used to hoop-jumping, is all. Maybe that's why I'm still a grunt and not a SOLDIER yet. Thank you, Mr. Tuesti."
