"Drop and gimme sixty-nine!" -- Logs
[Complete] Meeting of the Minds
21st-Mar-2007 11:19 pm
myself
Characters: Hojo (shinra_hojo) and Reeve (stray_cait)
Where: Reeve's office, 65th Floor; Science Department, 67th floor
Rating: PG-13, to play it safe
Summary: Hojo goes to meet the newest Department Head, which turns into something much more interesting. (Pre-time freeze)

Hojo had just returned from yet another visit to Shinra Manor, and learned that a new Head of the Department of Urban Affairs had been appointed during his absense. He generally liked to meet with new applicants, even unofficially, just to size them up. He was slightly displeased that this had been done while he was away. Of course, he had been gone for several months, conducting research, so it was only to be expected.

He opened the door carefully, eyes falling on the rather young man behind the desk.

"Hello. Mr. Tuesti, I presume."

Reeve was never the most attentive man when he was busy- once he had his mind fixated on something, the rest of the world was easily tuned out. And so it was today, with a set of blueprints spread across his desk and the naked skeleton of his spy prototype sitting on the corner, its hidden-camera 'eyes' fixated lifelessly on the far wall. "... maybe I miswired something in the CP- gaaah!"

The voice took him utterly by surprise; he knocked over his coffee mug with his elbow and sat straight up, eyes wide. "Who-" he began, and then faltered. He wasn't sure who the person was that'd just barged into his office, but a closer look was enough to confirm his suspicions- and make his stomach twist. There was only one person in Shinra that matched the other's description, and it wasn't a meeting he'd been looking forward to at all. Too many horror stories went around the building about just what kind of madman the head of the Science Department was.

Even when nervous, he could remember his manners, and he finally stood up and tried to put on what he hoped was a realistic smile. "I, uh... er... yes. You're... um... Professor Hojo, correct? Er... would you like to come in?"

"That I am." He entered the room without further prompting and glanced over the younger man. He then bent over the desk, his attention turning to the prototype.

"And what is this?" He adjusted his glasses, fascinated by the mechanical device.
23rd-Mar-2007 02:19 am (UTC)
"Er." He wasn't entirely sure how to respond to that... but the observation of his newest creation at least gave him a way to avoid discussing himself or anything else. "Ah, that's the prototype spy machine I'm working on for Administrative Research. He's still in development... there's something suspicious about his AI that I can't pinpoint, so I stripped him down again." He pointed at a pile of artificial black and white fur on the floor. "I guess you could say robotics is a, er, hobby?"
23rd-Mar-2007 02:40 am (UTC)
"Intriguing." His gaze returned to Reeve, eyes probing the man. He had read the files about the new Department Head's abilities concerning materia, and wished to test that further.

"Perhaps you would join me in a quest for coffee, seeing as you just spilled yours."
23rd-Mar-2007 02:44 am (UTC)
Reeve shifted nervously from one foot to the other, feeling much like a butterfly pinned to a specimen board. Which... probably wasn't far from the truth, to be honest. And the offer wasn't so much a request as an order, which just made it worse. he glanced longingly at his coffeemaker- empty right now, of course, damn his luck. "Er, i- if you like," he stammered. "I could brew some more if you like...?"
23rd-Mar-2007 02:50 am (UTC)
"I insist, Mr. Tuesti." He smiled a little, which turned out more creepy than anything. "I could use the walk."
23rd-Mar-2007 02:54 am (UTC)
"... of course. Forgive me." Taking a last longing look at the security of his office, he turned to follow Hojo- though the creepy grin simply made him even more nervous. "Er... ah... you've been gone for a while from HQ, Scarlet told me. Research trip?" He didn't want to talk to the man, but being quiet would be even worse.
23rd-Mar-2007 03:07 am (UTC)
"Yes. I had some specimens to tend to in Nibelheim. Perhaps you are familiar with the area? Beatiful mako fountains in the mountain there..."
23rd-Mar-2007 04:51 pm (UTC)
There was a huge problem with trying to summon Alexander that he'd forgotten- the summon monster itself was half the size of Shinra HQ, and he really didn't like the idea of breaking down his building for someone's scientific curiosity. His eyes cast about- this was getting painful, trying to redirect the summon- and he finally pointed out the window, where the summon could be seen arching up from one of the SOLDIER practice fields. His eyes flickered again, and he winced before letting the summon go. "... that work?" he finally said, rubbing at his forehead. He could already feel a headache coming on.
23rd-Mar-2007 05:00 pm (UTC)
"Perfectly." He hadn't been expecting that out of the young executive. Reeve had just performed a feat that was difficult for some 2nd-class SOLDIERS to perform.

"Impressive..." He murmured, jotting down some notes before slipping Reeve the final summon.
23rd-Mar-2007 05:14 pm (UTC)
"... er... thank you?" Reeve hadn't thought much of it- summons weren't his preferred type of materia, but he could handle them when the need arose. He decided to allow himself some small bit of smugness- maybe if he could at least keep the head of the Science Department impressed, he wouldn't be a guinea pig for him later on.

"One more...?" Taking the materia, he rolled it across his palms- and very nearly dropped it when he realized just what it was. "I... I... Bahamut? But stronger... I can't summon this here in the city! Alexander is one thing- the training grounds are big enough to handle that, but Bahamut? It'd set the entire city in a panic!"
23rd-Mar-2007 05:19 pm (UTC)
"There is no need to worry about what the masses will think. We already have them under control. All you need to worry about is casting that summon."

There was a cold, calculating tone to the scientist's voice.
23rd-Mar-2007 05:25 pm (UTC)
"There's a huge reason to worry about what the people think!" Reeve stared at Hojo as if the man had grown two heads. "The city can't afford a city-wide riot! People could get injured or killed, the economy would rupture... I'm not putting my city at risk!" The scientist might not care what the people thought... but Reeve did. He held the summon materia back out. "I'm sorry, but I cannot cooperate any further with this."
23rd-Mar-2007 05:31 pm (UTC)
Hojo quietly and calmly backhanded Reeve across the face, responding in a cold tone.

"Foolish boy. Don't you know that I hold your very life in my hands. With just a moment's notice, you could be out on the street... or put under observation."
23rd-Mar-2007 05:41 pm (UTC)
Of all the reactions Hojo could have made, this one was not one he expected. The blow snapped his head to one side, the crack resounding in the air... and he turned his head back to stare at Hojo as if really seeing him for the first time. "You.... hit me...?" He touched his cheek gingerly- he hadn't figured the scrawny scientist was all that strong, but the flesh was already starting to swell.

Reeve's eyes narrowed, the hazel-green irises sparking. He was mild-mannered and meek most of the time, but even a cat will fight back when cornered. "You need to check your hypothesis again if you think hitting me is going to change my mind."
23rd-Mar-2007 05:43 pm (UTC)
"Hah! You don't frighten me, boy. I could take you down like Gast, or that Turk, Vincent."

His true colors were starting to show through.
24th-Mar-2007 01:31 am (UTC)
Reeve blinked a few times, finally noticing the sandwich... and gingerly picked it up, looking it over before taking a tentative bite. "Er.... thanks." He briefly wondered why the hell he was thanking the man for putting him in the position he was in, but dismissed it. He did, however, resolve to himself to talk to Veld about Hojo. Especially if the scientist was going to beat him up every time he declined an offer.
24th-Mar-2007 01:36 am (UTC)
He watched over Reeve, checking his heart rate. He simply nodded at the thanks, making sure that he had not done any permanent damage to the executive.
24th-Mar-2007 01:56 am (UTC)
It didn't take him long to finish half the sandwich- when he was working, he tended to forget to eat until he was starving anyway- and once that was done he picked up the other half and glanced at Hojo, one eyebrow raised. The painkillers were beginning to kick in, albeit slowly; part of him wished the scientist had at least given him a cold pack for his face. He was going to be three shades of blue in the morning, he could tell. ".... is everything all right?" he finally asked, a bit nervous at the examination.
24th-Mar-2007 02:13 am (UTC)
Turning Reeve's head from side to side, he seemed satisfied. "Just making sure that no permanent damage was done."

He then called for a cold pack via the intercom.
24th-Mar-2007 02:22 am (UTC)
"..." Reeve winced at the testing- Hojo's hands were cold and it hurt to shift his head- but looked a bit more relieved at his next request. "So how long do I need to stay here? I have a few things i have to get ready for the next board meeting...."
24th-Mar-2007 02:31 am (UTC)
He took the cold pack from his assistant, placing it to Reeve's cheek.

"Not long. An hour at most."
24th-Mar-2007 02:40 am (UTC)
".... oh. All right...." He took the cold pack and held it, closing his eyes. If nothing else, maybe he could catch a quick nap....
24th-Mar-2007 02:49 am (UTC)
He sat on the counter, seeming strangely human for these few moments.

He picked up the clipboard, looking over his notes. "Rest if you need to."
24th-Mar-2007 02:52 am (UTC)
The words were lost on the executive- sometime between watching Hojo sit down and taking his notes back up, he'd fallen asleep- aided and abetted, most likely, by the painkiller.
